The guidebook says 8am opening but it was 9am before we got someone on the phone. We had to wait for the 8am group from Lock C1 to get to Lock C3 about 10am, to lock through. So plan your time accordingly.

    • WG Editor Comment:

According to the New York State Canal System web site: “The canals are open to recreational mariners from mid-May to mid-October daily from 8 am – 5 pm. However, certain locks operate on unique schedules, so boaters are encouraged to review the Boating Hours to ensure their planned route and timing is viable.”

The lock operator is covering both C1 and C2 so the wait time was a little longer. They also did the double flush before we entered going Northbound.

We measured ourselves at home at 19' 6" in salt water, not loaded. Our lightning dissipater just brushed the bottom of the bridge.

Leave green tower to starboard coming in! Friendly staff. Best shoreside heads and galley ever! Highly recommend!

Easy overnight stop. Piece of cake to get in to that part of the harbor, well marked and very deep. Large Anchorage area only one other boat when we were there. Beautiful large homes to the south and unspoiled barrier beach to the north. Definitely a good spot to stop when transiting Long Island sound.

Long, unmarked channel leads into the small area to anchor between Bannerman's Castle and the shore. Navionics kept me right in the center of the channel, which is very narrow. Right at the beginning of channel, the depth was 9 foot and kept increasing and anchored 18 feet. Only room for a few boats. Occasional wakes from River traffic but the main channel is pretty far away. Very peaceful and beautiful except when a train comes by every 15 or 20 minutes. If that bothers you, you may want to skip this anchorage, but I'm enjoying it.

Due to squall that came through, ended up staying 4 nights instead of 2. Dockmaster Steve could not have been more helpful and accommodating! No laundry on site but Steve arranged to have picked up and deliver back to just early next morning. Definitely will be back the next time I pass through this way!!
