Bridge comment on Lady's Island (Woods Memorial) Bridge

July 10, 2025. Waiting to go through Lady's Island Bridge. The published information says between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM, bridge opens on the hour. Not true, opens on the half hour. In the comments there is a post from the bridge captain that says this. Why hasn't the WG and others updated this information..

WG Editor Comment:
We vet all the information that comes in and have been waiting for the Local Notice to Mariners to publish an update us on this, which they have yet to do. The bridge tender confirmed that between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM, the bridge opens on the bottom of the hour (i.e., 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, etc.).

Mooring balls are free. The ring at the end was torn out. Dock is no longer usable. We did see fishermen and jet ski folks go ashore in a small break in the bushes. These are day moorings. We had SE wind overnight and it was a lumpy night. Holding was fine. We have 5' draft and depth on mooring close to shore was 7-8'. Island protects you from locals passing under bridge.

Long way to come but certainly worth the effort. Fort is historical and interesting to wander through. It's all self guided but you can join the ferry tour after it arrives around 10:30 AM. Park Rangers are around and can answer questions. Park fee is $15 a person. Honor system for paying. Cruising permit no longer in use. Great snorkeling around old piers. Swimming beach is crowded while ferry folks are here. There are two seaplane flights in morning and afternoon. Noisy for the few minutes they are taxiing in and out. Very quiet at night. Good wind protection. You can buy ice and snacks from onboard ferry while it is in. There is a small park gift shop. There is also a small museum. Take a flashlight while you tour the fort. Stairs are dark. And you'll be able to read the signs. Dogs are not permitted inside the fort but can go ashore. Leash required.

First night wind was from the east. Boat swung with the tide but breeze was good. Second night wind was from the north and we had a ton of no see'ums. Got out screens. Hot night.
Holding was good. We're 5' draft, plenty of depth. We anchored about 500' past R8. Quiet. Few locals. Be prepared before dusk for bugs if you don't have east wind. No place nearby to walk dogs so we used onboard "doggie park" (artificial grass up on the bow ).View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Great stop between Norfolk and Belhaven. Knowledgeable efficient courteous staff. Reasonable prices. Sometimes in busy transient seasons you will have to raft up. Other times there's lots of room. Clean restrooms. Super restaurant on site.

Look for faded orange and blue mooring balls. Cost is $35. Call Pirates Cove. First come first served. Popular place for day trippers from CT. If no moorings avail you can pick up one of the other moorings until day folks leave. With the understanding that you'll leave if owner returns. Good wind protection except from north. There are wakes during the day.

We had several fronts come through with no dragging anchor. Ferry wakes are negligible. Danfords Marina has a dinghy dock ($10 for 24hrs) just to the left of ferry landing. Lots of restaurants to choose from. Don't miss Rogers Frigate, classic old candy store. Cell service good enough for streaming. Beach access for pets.

Very efficiently run marina. Elaine was very accommodating when we needed to extend our stay. Clean convenient restrooms and showers. Nice marina store. Very popular restaurant at the marina. Marine taxi available to get to downtown Portland. Portland is a very busy port. Lot of wakes from passing commercial and pleasure craft. Docks in Portland are a great place to test your scopolamine patches.
