As you approach the anchorage icon depths shoal to 8 feet. We anchored short of the icon in 9 feet of water, with the anchor setting immediately and holding through the night in sandy mud with light even when the winds came up to 20 mph from the north at 0300 hrs bringing one foot waves through the anchorage. There was no discernable current and little traffic.
Turnagain Bay offers little protection for heavy weather and, if there is any concern, South River, 4.5 miles up the Neuse River would be a much better choice. We were here in June and the Green Head Biting Flies were out in force so we were grateful for our screens. Cell service was barely adequate. Shore access can be had on a sandy beach about one mile up the river but there are no facilities of any sort in the area. One notable point of interest about this anchorage is that it is on the edge of an enforced military exclusion zone containing a practice bombing range for the various military bases in the area. We did not experience it, but it might be disconcerting to wake up to F-18's engaging in some early morning practice. There are better alternatives in the area.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer
