We came through this bridge westbound. Nav alert said it was closed during day to mariners but when we called they said it was open.

I hadn’t done my homework and didn’t realize there was a four hour wait. I anchored near shore in 9 feet on the west side of the bridge and called them to schedule a morning appointment for the next day. Actually enjoyed a very peaceful night. Lots of barges here but the passing tugs rarely caused any disturbance.

I called at 1:30 in the afternoon to schedule a 5:30 (approximate) opening. I was delayed at the Calcasieu Locks for 2 hours. I called the highway department office again to let them know my situation. They were extremely helpful. The staff they sent to the bridge for a 5:00 PM opening stayed until we finally arrived at 7:30 PM. I was very impressed with their service.

VERY IMPORTANT to realize that you have to call the bridge FOUR HOURS BEFORE ARRIVAL to arrange for someone to be there to raise it (800-752-6706). Otherwise, you have to sit and wait, the way I did. Also, bear in mind that cell phone reception is very patchy all around here, so plan ahead.
