New Plymouth Settlement-Green Turtle Cay

  • Location: Central Abaco Cays
  • Lat / Lon: N 26° 45.730' / W 077° 20.025'
  • Depth: 7'-12'
  • Tide: 2.0'-2.5'
  • Description:

The area between the government dock at New Plymouth Settlement and the entrance to Black Sound is a popular anchorage for boaters visiting Green Turtle Cay.

The New Plymouth Settlement anchorage offers good protection in prevailing easterly conditions, but winds outside of those quadrants can cause an uncomfortable chop to build. The holding is excellent but due to the relative openness of the anchorage, it is not a good choice for heavy weather unless you are prepared to accept a bouncy ride.

The downside to this area is that is very busy with boat traffic of all sizes during the day, and you should expect numerous wakes, especially from the Bolo Ferry that runs through the anchorage several times per day. Things quiet down considerably by sunset. This anchorage is very popular with visiting boaters because it is the closest to the shops, bars, restaurants and services of the settlement.

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
