Big Joe Downer Cay-Amos Bight

  • Location: Bight of Abaco
  • Lat / Lon: N 26° 36.896' / W 077° 26.066'
  • Depth: 6 feet
  • Description:

Big Joe Downer Cay is located in the central portion of the Bight of Abaco about 8 nautical miles WSW of Treasure Cay. It's easy to see the effects Hurricane Dorian (Sept 1, 2019) had in this area. With Category 4-5 winds hovering over this area for two days, it's amazing anything lives at all. Unfortunately there are few tall trees left here. Although we heard a few birds, there were not many. We saw a few fish, including a bonefish, and a shark. But overall, the area was relatively devoid of much activity. We were able to anchor here with relative ease in about 6-8 feet of water. Charts appear to be slightly conservative, but overall it is shallow draft territory. If you want to get away from it all or like to bonefish this is an anchorage for you. Expect shallow waters as you approach the land/mangroves. Cell service is limited but you likely can get some connections from BTC or ALiV. DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
