Calabash Creek

  At extreme low tides, the entrance bar carries around 5 feet. You will be subject to wakes from the ICW if you anchor toward the mouth of the creek. This is a pleasant spot otherwise, with a golf course on the wooded northern shore. Give Calabash Creek red daybeacon 2A (not the ICW red daybeacon 2, which features the distinctive ICW yellow triangle) a wide berth to avoid the shoal mentioned above. Then, turn toward the row of charted dolphins, and drop the hook near the north side of the center of the river. The opposite shore, just upstream of the dolphins, has increased shoaling. Do not anchor near the entrance, as other vessels may arrive after you. Use two anchors in bad weather or if the anchorage is too crowded for normal swinging room. As always, show an anchor light. Shrimp boats and sightseeing vessels, whose wakes may disturb you, use the channel at night. You can visit the town of Calabash by dinghy from this anchorage.
