Lower Cape Bend Chute

  • Location: Upper Mississippi
  • Mile Marker: 47.7 LDB
  • Lat / Lon: N 37° 15.261' / W 089° 29.450'
  • Depth: 10 feet
  • Description:

Enter by leaving channel at the red buoy at mm 47.7 and turning upstream in the chute towards LDB. Taking advantave of the low water we split the different between Marquette Island and the wing dam on the LDB and proceeded upcurrent in water that diminished to 10' normal pool well off the main channel. There is some current protection behind the exposed mid-channel island. We opted to anchor in 12' of water with about a 1 mile an hour current to keep us oriented during the night. Holding was good in sand and the anchor came up clean in the morning. No traffic, but some noise from industrial area on shore. Good cell reception but no shore access. In higher water explore the area off the tail of Marquette Island in 4-6 foot water normal pool. This is not a first choice anchorage but a viable alternative when the Diversion Canal is full.

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
