Long Cay

  • Location: Northern Exuma
  • Lat / Lon: N 24° 40.049' / W 076° 48.811'
  • Depth: 8'-10'
  • Tide: 2.0'-2.5'
  • Description:

Long Cay as the name implies is a narrow 1.8nm long strip of rock oriented in a N-S direction that has a rocky peninsula extending westward near the midpoint. It is possible to anchor along the entire length of Long Cay, however the area north of the peninsula is more exposed and subject to ocean swells more than the southern end of the cay.  The anchorage on the north end is useful as a staging point for vessels wishing to enter the banks at Highborne Cut but would prefer to wait for the tidal flow to subside before making the attempt. Ordinarily we would recommend the north half of the cay as a day stop only, as moving as little as 0.50 nm can mean the difference between rocking and rolling and a good night’s sleep in relative calm.

The best holding is found ~200 yds southwest of the house that sits on the end of the rocky peninsula.

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
