Lynyard Cay

  • Location: Abacos
  • Lat / Lon: N 26° 22.092' / W 076° 59.095'
  • Depth: 8'-10'
  • Tide: 2.5'-3.0'
  • Description:

It is possible to anchor anywhere along the southern 2/3 of Lynyard Cay. The northern 1/3 is not recommended for anchoring because it is rocky and shallow and is also subjected to swells sweeping in from North Bar Channel.

The best anchorage is found near the mid point of the Cay in front of a group of three houses. The holding is poor farther south, although boaters wanting to dive on the reefs at the south end of Lynyard may do so provided they ensure a good set and do not plan to stay for an entire tide cycle. The grassy areas on the south of the Cay will allow an anchor to set but will not permit easy resetting if the anchor dislodges when the boat swings 180 ° on the tide. Smaller shallower draft vessels will have better luck on the south end of the Cay by anchoring close to the shoreline in sand.

DISCLAIMER: Before committing to an anchorage, you should confirm that the location is not governed by a regulation that may conflict with your plans. An increasing number of states and municipalities are enacting laws that define where and how long you may anchor.
